The “World’s Borough” is officially adding one more offering to its entertainment starting lineup: professional women’s soccer.

Gotham FC announced early Tuesday that in 2028 the team will move to Etihad Park, a stadium currently under construction in Willets Point, Queens.

Elected officials, team stakeholders and players applauded the relocation on social media, calling it part of an overall effort to establish the franchise as a force in the New York City sports landscape by bringing the games closer to fans in a world-class venue.

Gotham FC, a two-time national champion, has been playing at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, since 2020.

“Bringing Gotham FC to Queens means that the young girl kicking a ball around Jackson Heights, Jamaica or the South Bronx will be able to take the train and watch some of the best players in the world in her own city,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani in a statement released hours before he was scheduled to officially announce the news at City Hall alongside Gov. Kathy Hochul. “It means more customers for neighborhood restaurants, more visitors filling our hotels and, most importantly, a permanent home for world-class women’s soccer in the greatest city in the world.”

The team was born across the Hudson in 2006 and originally named Jersey Sky Blue. Future New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and his wife Tammy Murphy were co-founders — in part, they said, to show their daughter there was a viable path for playing professional women’s soccer. The team was rebranded as Sky Blue FC from 2008 until 2020, and became NJ/NY Gotham FC from 2021 to 2024.

Gotham FC won the National Women’s Soccer League Championship in both 2023 and 2025, earning the team a ticker-tape parade up Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes. The team is currently ranked 7th in the NWSL, with 6 wins out of 12 games played so far this season.

Etihad Park, located across the way from Citi Field and near Arthur Ashe Stadium and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, will also be home to New York City FC, the men’s Major League Soccer team, when it is scheduled to open in 2027. Though the 25,000 seat venue will be dedicated primarily to soccer, it will be used to host concerts and other sporting events as well — with perks including a Five Boroughs Food Hall, which will represent cuisines from across the city.

Starting Tuesday morning, fans can put down $28 deposits for season tickets to watch the Gotham FC play their first season at their new home. Existing season ticket members who renew for the 2027 season will automatically retain priority access for 2028, according to the team’s website.

"Our move to New York City is a statement by our club leadership that they know we have something special at Gotham FC, and they are committed to ensuring we have the resources and environments to support our continued success,” said Tierna Davidson, a Gotham FC defender and the club captain. “That means everything to the players at this club, and we are looking forward to playing in a world-class stadium and sharing this next chapter with our supporters.”
