The newly-constructed Student Service Centre, named after freedom fighter Tiruppur Kumaran, at the Pondicherry University was inaugurated recently.
Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani inaugurated the new facility in the presence of Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR University of Law, Srikrishna Deva Rao and Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University P. Prakash Babu.
The University has named the centre as Tiruppur Kumaran Student Service Centre (TKSSC) in honour of the freedom fighter from Erode in Tamil Nadu. Tiruppur Kumaran fought against the Britishers after forming his Desa Bandhu Youth Association. He attained martyrdom at the age of 28 following injuries he sustained in a police assault during a protest march against the British rule, the PU said in a release.
The TKSSC would serve as a single point of contact for students throughout their academic journey from admission and enrolment to graduation, placement and alumni engagement. The centre would house the Office of the Chief Warden, Placement Cell, Dean of Students Welfare, Proctorial Board and other student-support cells, the release said.
It also features a semi-closed amphitheatre with a stage and seating capacity of approximately 500 persons, which would serve as a venue for student gatherings, meetings and cultural programmes. The centre has also been provided with two food outlets near the amphitheatre and a common mini-round-table seminar hall, the release said.
