The Namakkal Corporation has intensified the removal of Prosopis juliflora in the Corporation’s limits and have urged the patta land owners to remove the trees from their lands.
In a release, Namakkal Corporation Commissioner S. Selva Balaji said that the district administration has been continuously undertaking various initiatives to protect the environment, maintain water bodies, and improve groundwater resources. As part of the initiatives, the removal of prosopis juliflora growing in lakes and water bodies within the Corporation limits is currently being carried out intensively.
The widespread growth of prosopis juliflora in and around water bodies adversely affects the natural environment and poses challenges to the conservation of water resources. Therefore, the Corporation administration is prioritising the removal of these trees to maintain water bodies in an environmentally sustainable manner, the Commissioner added.
The Corporation Commissioner also added that it has requested patta land owners whose lands contain Prosopis juliflora to voluntarily come forward and remove the trees from their respective properties. Controlling the spread of these trees on private patta lands, in addition to water bodies, will contribute to environmental protection.
Patta landowners are requested to maintain their lands properly and remove the trees growing on their properties within a prescribed time, extending their full cooperation to the Corporation’s environmental protection initiatives. Failure to remove the trees in accordance with the instructions issued may result in appropriate action, including the imposition of penalties, as per the applicable laws and regulations in force, the Commissioner added.
