The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed Madurai Corporation to make the fountain in the middle of the Eco Park functional.

A Division Bench of Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel was hearing a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to the authorities to maintain the Eco Park.

The petitioners C. Jaya Selva Pandian, R. Chandrasekaran, F. Ahmed Shamoon, B. Ananth and K. Sundaralingam sought a direction to the authorities to maintain the Eco Park as a recreational area for the residents and as a vital green lung space.

They sought a direction to the authorities to prevent the Eco Park from turning into an amusement park contrary to the very purpose of its establishment.

They also sought a direction to the authorities to allow the public to use the park, morning and evening, without the levy of any entry fee, and to restore the park to its original condition.

The court said it will be ensured that the Eco Park is maintained as an Eco Park giving lung space. As a first step, the fountain, which is in the middle of the park, must be made functional, the court directed and posted the matter for hearing to September 16.
