Roddick, the 2003 US Open champion, confessed he became worried about the eighth seed after witnessing his error-prone start. But the former World No. 1 was pleased with the way Shelton steadied the ship after a "horrible" and "nervy" first set.

Shelton will hope to avoid a similar start and aim for a straightforward win in his second-round encounter against Hubert Hurkacz on Wednesday.
