Nintendo's Latest 'Switch 2 Edition' Is Here, And It'll Really Make You Sweat
I like to think of myself as a pretty fit person. I go to the gym and run multiple times a week, I watch my diet, I go on walks. Nintendo's latest addition to the Switch 2 Edition catalogue has convinced me that, actually, I'm not as ship-shape as I thought.
You see, I just finished a few sessions of Fitness Boxing 3: Your Personal Trainer's new 'Boost Up' mode, and I'm currently more sweat than man.
As is the standard for Nintendo's own Switch 2 Editions at this point, Fitness Boxing 3 — developed by Imagineer and published by Nintendo — bundles in a small slice of extra content alongside the expected visual bump and system-specific bonuses like GameShare. The newbies this time around are the chance to play with your camera on, so you can correct your form in real time, and the aforementioned 'Boost Up' sessions, which crank up the tempo the longer you play.
Keen to make sure I was doing everything correctly, I did dust off my Switch 2 camera to keep an eye on my workout form. Seeing that it plastered my sweating face in a large box on the right side of the screen, it's safe to say that it didn't remain plugged in for long — I could already feel how wet the front of my top was, I didn't need to see it, too.
Capture restrictions when the camera is attached made grabbing screens impossible, so mercifully you don't get to see it either.
Which brings me nicely to the Boost Mode. These exercises divide your usual boxing workouts into four rounds on normal intensity, and six on high intensity, each one upping the tempo from the last. The idea is to stay with the beat for as long as possible, landing your punches at the right time to avoid getting a 'Miss' and losing one of your three hearts.
By round four, I was feeling it, by round six, I was using the brief pause between combos to wipe the sweat out of my eyes as my dog looked disapprovingly at me from the corner. "I'm usually asleep in my bed while you're at your desk, human. What the heck is this insubordination??"
I managed to finish it up and felt all the better for it (even if my lower back is now a little damper than usual). Hopping back over to a regular session, I got to see the new 'Advanced Scoring Mode' (not available in Boost sessions, fortunately), which gives your 'Perfect' timings an extra level of difficulty by also taking your punch speed into account.
I can only imagine that I'll be far too sore for another session tomorrow (and just like the Switch 1 version, it's good to give myself a break from that grating music), but Fitness Boxing 3's Switch 2 additions might just be slotting into my cardio routine. Clearly, I need it.
Thanks to Nintendo for sending code our way. The catchily titled Fitness Boxing 3: Your Personal Trainer - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is now available on the Switch eShop for £49.99 / $59.99 as a standalone purchase, or as a £7.99 / $9.99 upgrade pack for those who already have the Switch 1 version.
Jim came to Nintendo Life in 2022 and, despite his insistence that The Minish Cap is the best Zelda game and his unwavering love for the Star Wars prequels (yes, really), he has continued to write news and features on the site ever since.
I'm already panting and sweating before the workout when I see my favorite trainer.🌡
Haha, good stuff. So, the camera's not tracking your movements, it's just a visual aide for the player? Do you just hold the Joy-Con for movement detection? If one is comfortable with it, GameChat is actually kind of a neat idea for those that like to exercise with others.
I totally injured myself trying to "do good" in ring fit adventure on switch and now i don't mess around with these kinds of games. user error, but I feel like games just kinda put me in a headspace of sacrificing self to win, which is fine as long as I'm not likely to sustain an injury.
I need to get back into the habit of playing it, hoping picking up the upgrade will help motivate me to.
I swear every time I want to get one of these… a new one comes out.
@-wc- I have two and they do have lots of settings in this to help prevent injury. I find the tracking on ducks to be lacking for example. I haven't turned it off, but certain moves can just count as successful. I usually don't reply around here, but I think this series does a better job than ring fit to be an engaging workout. Less frills, kind of less fun than ring fit, but it's more straight to the point. As someone that needs to lose weight, I do credit this game series for at least keeping me sort of on track.
@Ryu_NiiyamaActually the third one has been around for some time. I've been meaning to get it but it's true that with the new console I was thinking maybe I should wait just in case there's one around the corner.
That being said with the NS2 version being a thing maybe it is safer than I thought to jump in now without being worried that a brand new one might release soon.
@mlt some think so. I think it’s ok. Maybe watch a YouTube if you are concerned. But I think this is more sport than game, if you do the movement correctly and treat it more as shadow boxing than let’s dance. And the music is manipulated in a way that it matches the beat. I would buy the upgrade immediately if there were new trainers, outfits and especially music. As I use my launch day switch 1 now exclusively for Fitness Boxing 3 I’ll pass.
@mlt yes. Yes it is haha. The music is terrible at least in the first or second game can’t remember which I have now. But dam. I bought the dlc packs and they were even worse somehow :// I also felt like overall the speed of the interface was lacking and it was all just a bit janky. That all said,, it was a great workout!
I’ve upgraded to the Switch 2 edition with this. Have not tried the boost mode just yet. I still want more characters to be added in. Sophie to return in fact.
@schweinebrot @neogyo I'll probably end up getting this on sale. I tried the demo of I think it was the first game and quite liked it. I watched a video that had Danger Zone and, well, yeah it's pretty terrible. Do I care it is terrible though? Probably not too much. But they should absolutely hire a composer for the next game.
