New Apple AirPods might come with cameras for better sound quality
Apparently, the next generation of AirPods could come with cameras, and no, they are not there, so your earbuds can take photos. Apple could use those cameras to help your AirPods understand what you are watching and make the audio experience better.
According to a report by MacRumors, citing references found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release, Apple is developing camera-equipped AirPods that could detect the screen a user is looking at. The earbuds could then use that information, along with motion sensors, to better understand the user’s head position and adjust Spatial Audio accordingly.
In simple terms, this could make the sound feel like it is coming from the screen you are watching. So, if you are watching a movie on your laptop or TV and turn your head, the audio could stay linked to the screen instead of moving with you. The system could also recognise different screens, including phones, tablets, TVs and monitors, and tell them apart if you have more than one display.
Now Apple already uses dynamic head tracking with supported AirPods, where the sound stays fixed as you move your head. Adding cameras could give the system another layer of information, allowing it to determine where the relevant screen is and make those adjustments more precisely.
The same code also reportedly hints at Visual Intelligence features, suggesting that the cameras could be used for more than just improving audio. However, these are still based on software references and reports, and Apple has not announced camera-equipped AirPods yet.
Either way, the camera-equipped AirPods offer an interesting glimpse at where Apple could be taking its earbuds. They may not just be headphones anymore, but small wearable devices that can understand what is happening around you and use that information to make the audio experience more immersive. What to expect from Apple’s September 9 event
Even if camera-equipped AirPods do not appear with Apple’s September 9 launch plans the spotlight is said to be on the new iPhones.
The biggest focus is likely to be on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple is also expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone, reportedly positioned as an Ultra model. The regular iPhone 18, meanwhile, is not expected until spring 2027 as part of Apple’s reported shift in its iPhone launch strategy.
The Apple Watch Series 12 is also expected to make an appearance. Reports suggest that it could be a relatively modest upgrade, with a faster chip and improvements to health and fitness features, rather than a major redesign.- EndsPublished By: Divya BhatiPublished On: Sep 1, 2026 18:40 ISTAlso Read | Using too much AI can make you sound like AI, researchers call it robotoid humannessAlso Read | Be human, get $100 million bonus: EY tells employees who use AI at workAlso Read | Pakistani journalist records demo of driverless car, crashes into police van
