FIFA World Cup: Donald Trump trolls Thomas Tuchel over Harry Kane call in England's semi-final loss
This meant that Kane was used more as a defender as Argentina started to attack more. Tuchel's tactics flopped as Lionel Messi inspired a late comeback for the defending world champions and they won the match 2-1 to progress to the final against Spain on Sunday, July 19.
Tuchel was slammed for his defensive tactics by former players and fans and now Trump tore into the German for his call. The US president said it was a mistake to make Kane play in defence.
Trump said that he doesn't know anything about coaching in football, but felt that it was unusual to see Kane in defence, someone he had played golf around 18 months ago.
"You have a great player in England, who I played golf with -- you know that, right? Harry, who's been fantastic. I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player."
"What do I know about soccer? They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defence.
"We have got to be a little offensive, right? But no I'm not going to call it. What do I know about coaching? It was unusual, but Harry is a great guy, actually," said Trump at a FIFA reception event, as quoted by ESPN.TUCHEL HAS NO REGRETS OVER ARGENTINA LOSS
Speaking right after the loss to Argentina, Tuchel said that he didn't have any regrets about his decision to become more defensive in the second half in the semi-final and felt England had played their best football in the tournament.
"We played one of our better matches, maybe our best match in the circumstances. The team was top, we couldn't get over the line but no regrets," said Tuchel.
The German has received support from the English FA and is expected to see out his contract that will only finish by the end of Euro 2028.
