Delhi-NCR sees heavy rain, orange and yellow alerts issued for parts of national capital
The heavier spells, classified under moderate rain, are expected to sweep through southeast Delhi, east Delhi, Shahdara, central Delhi, northeast Delhi, south Delhi, New Delhi, west Delhi, northwest Delhi and north Delhi. These are the pockets where waterlogging tends to show up first, at low-lying crossings and under flyovers where drainage struggles to keep pace with sudden downpours.
Elsewhere, the rain is expected to stay gentler. Light showers have been forecast over other stretches of central Delhi, south Delhi, New Delhi, southwest Delhi, west Delhi, northwest Delhi and north Delhi, enough to cool the evening air without disrupting much on the ground.
The weather system has not confined itself to the capital alone. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain, over parts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar, over the next two hours. For commuters criss-crossing the Delhi-NCR border daily, that means the evening rush could turn slower and slicker than usual.
An orange alert, in the IMD's colour-coded system, calls for preparedness, a nudge to keep an eye on the skies and plan travel with a little more caution. Yellow, one notch gentler, simply asks residents to stay updated and informed.
