H1N1 alert: Health Ministry urges children and high risk groups to be cautious

In its latest post on X, the ministry said common signs of the infection include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches and fatigue. It advised people to consult a doctor or visit the nearest government health facility if symptoms continue for more than five to six days.

The advisory carries special importance for young children, elderly people and those who have underlying medical conditions. These groups may need greater attention because flu-like illnesses can become more serious in people with lower immunity or pre-existing health problems.Influenza A (H1N1) is a seasonal respiratory infection that is mostly self-limiting in healthy adults. Influenza A H1N1 affects the respiratory system and may initially appear similar to ordinary seasonal flu. Along with fever, cough and sore throat, some patients may experience runny nose, tiredness, headache and pain in the muscles or joints.

The Health Ministry’s public awareness material also lists nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea among symptoms that may be seen in some cases. Symptoms can differ from person to person. While some patients may have a mild illness, others may feel exhausted or develop persistent fever and cough.

People should not assume that every fever or cough is H1N1. However, they should monitor their health closely, particularly when symptoms do not improve after several days or become more severe.WHEN TO CONSULT A DOCTOR

The ministry has advised people not to delay medical consultation if symptoms persist beyond five to six days. Parents and caregivers should be particularly cautious when young children develop flu-like symptoms. Elderly persons and people with conditions that affect their overall health should also seek timely medical guidance.

A doctor can examine the patient, assess the severity of symptoms and decide whether further testing or treatment is needed. People should avoid taking medicines without a doctor’s advice, especially antibiotics or other prescription drugs.PREVENTION AND RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR

The ministry’s awareness material recommends simple steps to reduce the spread of respiratory illness. People should cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, wash their hands often and avoid close contact when they are unwell.

Those with flu symptoms should rest, drink sufficient water and eat healthy food. Avoiding crowded places during illness can also help protect family members and others from infection.

The ministry said healthy adults often recover from H1N1 with proper rest and care. However, persistent symptoms should never be ignored, particularly in children, older adults and people with underlying health conditions.- EndsPublished By: Smarica PantPublished On: Sep 1, 2026 15:06 IST
