NFHS-6 overweight adults data: Andhra Pradesh, Kerala lead; Jharkhand, Bihar lowest

According to the 2023-24 survey, nearly 45 per cent of adults in Andhra Pradesh were overweight, followed closely by Kerala at 41.9 per cent. Southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana also remained well above the national average of 29 per cent. In contrast, Jharkhand (16.9 per cent), Bihar (19.6 per cent), and Chhattisgarh had some of the country's lowest shares of overweight adults.

The state-wise NFHS-6 data show a similar pattern. In Andhra Pradesh, where nearly 48 per cent of women and 42 per cent of men were overweight or obese, around 22 per cent of women and 24 per cent of men took medications for high and very high blood sugar levels. Meanwhile, 24 per cent of women and 26 per cent of men suffered from hypertension.
