Caught washing premises with drinking water, Hyderabad resident fined Rs 5000
The HMWSSB said the consumer has been directed to pay the 5,000 penalty within seven days. It warned that any repeat violation could invite stricter action, including disconnection of both drinking water and sewerage connections under Section 42 of the Act.
In a statement, the Water Board said the action was taken after a man was seen washing the premises of a building on Road No. 33 using potable water. The incident was subsequently verified by officials, following which the penalty was imposed.
The civic body reiterated that drinking water should be used only for essential domestic purposes and not for activities such as washing vehicles, roads, buildings or other premises. It appealed to residents to conserve water, particularly at a time when demand for potable water remains high.
The Board also cited Sections 38 and 39 of the HMWSSB Act, 1989, which require consumers to use water judiciously and empower authorised officials to inspect properties to detect misuse or wastage of drinking water.
Officials said the Board has been stepping up enforcement against the misuse of potable water as part of its conservation efforts. They urged citizens to adopt responsible water usage practices and avoid unnecessary wastage to help ensure an adequate supply for all consumers.
The HMWSSB warned that repeated violations would not only attract financial penalties but could also lead to the suspension of water and sewerage services, in addition to any other legal action permitted under the Act. The Board appealed to the public to cooperate in safeguarding drinking water resources through responsible and sustainable use.- EndsPublished By: Ritaban MisraPublished On: Jul 18, 2026 00:16 IST
